DRACUT, MA – Gerald A. Surprenant, Sr., a longtime resident of Dracut, died Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Lowell General Hospital after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Maryruth “Ruth” (McGarry) Surprenant, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.

Born in Lowell on January 25, 1940, Jerry was the son of the late Armand Surprenant and Eleanor (Ingalls) Surprenant. He was raised and educated in Lowell, graduating from Lowell High School. He furthered his education at Middlesex Community College and Southern New Hampshire University, earning Associate and Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice.

Jerry was a proud veteran of the Marine Corps and was very active in the Marine Corps League, serving as Commandant of the Lowell Detachment.

Jerry served on the Dracut Police Department for 23 years as the Department’s first Community Police Officer, a patrolman, a detective, a member of the SWAT team, and as the Department’s fire arms instructor. He loved the Town of Dracut, referring to it often as the Center of the Universe. During his service as a police officer and after his retirement in 2002, Jerry was very involved in community affairs. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Council on Aging and a Commissioner of the Dracut Housing Authority. He was a frequent volunteer at the Dracut Senior Center and senior housing projects, at veterans events, and with Community Teamwork. He was also a Mason, a lodge member of the Ancient York Lodge in Lowell, and was engaged in the Lodge’s charitable endeavors.

Jerry was a true gentleman and a man of integrity and honor. He always found time to help others.

Along with his wife, Jerry is survived by his two children, Maryellen Moran and her husband Robert E. Moran, of Brookline, Massachusetts, and Gerald A. Surprenant, Jr., of Tyngsborough, his granddogs, Eddie, his constant companion, and Maggie, along with several nephews and nieces and brothers-in-laws and sister-in-law.. He was predeceased by his brother, Armand Surprenant.

SURPRENANT – Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10 at the Dracut Funeral Home, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, Dracut, MA. His funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Church United, 10 Arlington St., Dracut, MA. Burial will follow at Tyngsborough Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry’s memory to the Dracut Council on Aging, 951 Mammoth Rd., Dracut, MA 01826.
