DRACUT, MA - George J. Malapanis, 92, of Dracut, MA, passed away at home, peacefully on January 8, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife, Angelike (Panagou) Malapanis, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
George was born in Lowell, MA on November 15, 1925, he was the son of the late Catherine (Booras) and Demetrios Malapanis. He attended Lowell High School where he played football.

His first store was Terminal Fruit in Couple Square. He then bought Brookside in Hudson NH. When his sons were older he returned to Lowell and purchased Palmer News on Appleton Street, which was then renamed Lemon Tree Food Stores. Twenty years ago the family opened Speedy Check in the same location. He was very well known for his cheerful smile and his love of people and conversation. He worked until he was 91 years old.
George was an avid sports fan who loved the Red Sox and Patriots, but his passion was the stock market and horse racing. He and his son, Costas owned race horses for years. Above all else, George loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially telling funny stories, singing and dancing.
Along with his wife Angelike, he is survived by his two sons, James G. Malapan and his wife Sharon of Pelham, NH, where he resided the last three years, and Costas Malapanis and Cherie Ansin of Lunenburg, MA; his daughter Catherine (Malapanis) Farrell and her husband Paul of Bettendorf, Iowa; his nine grandchildren, Iris O’Donnell and her husband David, Kaela Law and her husband Jonathan, Lani Weiner and her husband Brett, Angelike Dyer and her husband Jon, Danny Farrell, Christopher Farrell, Alyssa Farrell, Chris Ansin, and Ryan Ansin and his wife Catherine; his four great-grandchildren who loved their Papou, Connor, Keira, Vivienne O’Donnell and Demetra Law; his two nephews, Chris Kondra and his wife Carol and George Kondos; and his two nieces, Rena Monoxeles and Carol Hirshfield.
