Avery E. Vainas Obituary (1921 - 2016)

Vainas, 94, died peacefully, Thursday, May 26th, at Northwood Rehab and Nursing Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Rita (Petrakos) Vainas. Avery was born in Lowell, MA on August 8, 1921, a son of the late Theodora (Vasiliou) and Evangelos Vainas. Avery enlisted in the US Army and served his country proudly during WWII where he was a member of the First Infantry Division, also known as the "Big Red One" and the "Fighting First". He stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy, France during the D-Day invasion and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a Bronze Star,Good Conduct medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and the European, African, And Middle Eastern Theater campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead. Avery worked as a talented carpenter, by trade, for various construction companies. In his free time he enjoyed being an avid New England sports fan, watching the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics and completing cross word scratch tickets. He also enjoyed taking care of the yard, pool, and especially his family, where he was a loving and devoted husband and father. Avery is survived and will be deeply missed by his four daughters, Thea Paras and Cassandra and her husband William Morin all of Dracut and Mary and her husband Raymond Dupont and Georgia Morin all of Lowell; son, Evan Vainas of Lowell; sister, Elly Vainas of Chelmsford; Best and most loyal friend, Brian Soucy of Pelham; eleven grandchildren, Stephanie Paras, Matthew Morin, Stacey Felix, Eric Morin, Avery Morin, Alicia Melo, Christopher Morin, Evan England, Grant Dupont, Sophia Silveira, Nicholas Vainas; and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Rita (Petrakos) Vainas, son-in-law, George Paras; good friend and neighbor, Ernie Lambert.
