Jennie Coumas passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025, at Freeman Lake Assisted Living in North Chelmsford at the age of 99 surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was the beloved wife of the late Louis Coumas with whom she shared 55 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2002.
Jennie was born in Lowell on July 20, 1925, daughter of the late Demetrios and Anastasia (Kyriakeas) Palavras.
When talking about Jennie, people used the words selfless, inspirational, driven, and caring. During her career, she worked at General Electric and the UMass Lowell Research Foundation. She had many friends and loved working with UML faculty, staff and students. After retiring, Jennie spent 33 years volunteering at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre which she enjoyed tremendously. Jennie loved arts and crafts, often making beautiful holiday decorations for friends and family, including her infamous ribbons and reindeers. She sold many of her creations at the Dracut High School craft fair. She also enjoyed knitting and made countless hats and scarves to give to family and friends, as well as donating to those in need. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing card games and scrabble. Her favorite place was Kennebunkport, Maine, where she spent many happy times with her husband and family. Jennie enjoyed traveling to Greece with friends and family exploring the Greek culture. Devoted to her children and grandchildren, family was the most important thing for Jennie.
Jennie leaves a legacy of loved ones including a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Dr. John Kendrick of North Andover; three sons and daughters in-law: Dr. James and Rhonda Coumas of Charlotte, North Carolina; Michael and Kimberly Coumas of Hudson, New Hampshire; Gregg and Mikki Coumas of Cottage Grove, Oregon; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Perry and Kate Coumas, Owen Coumas, Adrian and Kinsey Coumas, Kyle and Kara Coumas, Kaitlin and Matthew Burris, Kristen Coumas, and Melina Coumas; and two great grandchildren, Sawyer James Coumas and Remy Paul Coumas.
Known for her generosity, kindness and zest for life, Jennie loved people and made friends quickly. Jennies family would like to extend their utmost gratitude to the staff at Freeman Lake Assisted Living for their support during her stay there. Jennie always discussed enjoying the exercise classes and handing out chocolates to everyone who helped her along the way.
