Campbell, 53, of New Bedford, formerly of Dracut and Lowell for many years, died Saturday August 14, 2010 in Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, with family and friends by her side. Joan fought a courageous three year battle with cancer. Born in San Antonio, TX on October 2, 1956, she was a daughter of the late Francis Campbell and the late Theresa (Head) (Campbell) Surkis. She received her education in the Lowell and Dracut school systems and was a graduate of Dracut High School class of 1974. Joan was an avid reader and in her free time she enjoyed painting, drawing and going to yard sales. Surviving her are her daughter Rachel Campbell and her fiance Anthony Benson and her son Shawn Campbell all of New Bedford; one grandson Owen Benson of New Bedford; one sister Mary Campbell of Lawrence; two brothers Joseph Campbell and his wife Susan of Lakeland, FL and Mark Campbell and his wife Sharon of Merrimack, NH; a stepbrother Al Surkis and his wife Arlene of Westford; her best friend for over 30 years Mary Gordon of Lowell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also the stepdaughter of the late Abram Surkis and stepsister of the late Stephen Surkis. Friends may call at DRACUT FUNERAL HOME 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT, on Thursday from 4 until 7 PM. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 AM at the Parish of Ste. Marguerite D'Youville in Ste. Therese Church, Dracut. Interment to follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell.
