Dracut, Massachusetts
John F. Gibson, age 72, a resident of Dracut, passed away unexpectedly at Cape Cod Hospital, Barnstable on Sunday, October 11, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Cathy M. (Fowler) Gibson with whom he enjoyed 40 years of marriage.
He was born in Bellows Falls, Vermont on February 20, 1954, and was the son of the late Earle and Eleanor (Malley) Gibson.
John was raised in North Charlestown, NH, and graduated from Fall Mountain Regional High School in 1972. He attended St. Michael’s College in Colchester, VT, Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA, and Oregon State University in Corvalis, OR, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1977.
He worked for a variety of employers, including the Grinnell Corporation, Bard, and International Paper, over his long career as a computer programmer/systems analyst. While working at Grinnell in Warren, OH, he met Cathy, and married her in 1986. They relocated to Lowell, MA, and welcomed son Nathan in 1988. The family moved to Dracut in 1992 into a new-build home that he remained in for the rest of his life.
John and his family frequented nearly every restaurant in town, often joking that the oven didn’t work on weekends. He loved to play cards, tinker with the latest computer technology, watch his favorite TV shows, and travel around the northeast. In retirement, John loved to visit the ocean at Ogunquit, ME, often going multiple times per week.
John is remembered as a loving father. He was a consistent presence with Dracut’s Boy Scout Troop 83 and a proud supporter of stringed instrument and orchestral programs in Dracut and beyond. Always having an affection for babies, he was delighted to become a grandfather in 2023 and spend time with little Eleanor.
In addition to his loving wife, John is survived by his son Nathan Gibson, daughter-in-law Lindsay O’Brien, and granddaughter Eleanor Gibson, all of Los Alamos, NM. He was predeceased by his sister Linda Gibson of North Charlestown, NH.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 16, 2026 from 9am to 10am at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, Dracut. His Funeral Service will follow his visitation at 10am. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery, Dracut.
