Michael Robert Tang

–

Dracut, Massachusetts

Michael Robert Tang, age 78, a longtime resident of Dracut, passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on Sunday, February 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 12, 1947, the son of Stephen Jen-Yao Tang and Dorothy Yung-Chang (Tsui) Tang.

He lived in a way that was as simple as it was profound. He sought out what made him happy, and what made him happy was family. Whether he was welcoming a family member into his home, documenting life’s milestones behind a video camera lens, or simply shuffling through Market Basket, he found his purpose in being useful. He had a rare gift for solving problems quickly, as only he could, and an even rarer gift for forming genuine connections. He treated everyone, from lifelong friends to strangers he had just met, with the same signature warmth and respect.

Family was the gravity that held his world together. He was not just a face in the crowd at games, recitals, and school events. He was a constant, joyful, and fully engaged presence. Over the years, the people at those events became part of his extended family, drawn in by his genuine interest in everyone’s success, not just his own children’s. His children and grandchildren never had to wonder if they were loved. They felt it in his time, his attention, and his steady, reassuring presence.

That same brilliant problem-solving mind defined his professional life. A true pioneer at the forefront of technology, he met his wife while she was working as one of his punch card operators, a fitting start to a life of shared discovery. He went on to contribute to advanced embedded systems for government applications, but his true passion was the weather. He played a vital role in changing how meteorologists forecast storms, helping bridge early radar and satellite technology into the live imagery we all rely on today. Yet if you visited his office, you would never have guessed the scale of his achievements. The walls were not covered in awards. They were covered in photographs of his family, a daily reminder of what truly mattered.

He also understood the joy of a moment shared. Though he might sit at the piano with a bit of reluctant encouragement, he would soon fill the room with the lively bounce of ragtime music. He was more likely to be found chasing thunderstorms across the Merrimack Valley, celebrating under a canopy of fireworks, or heading out on his motorcycle with his wife Dianne to enjoy the freedom of the open road and visit with his grandchildren. He had an unmistakable love for life and a way of making the ordinary feel worth celebrating. Even the small things, like his legendary fondness for roast duck, remain memories that bring a smile to our faces.

To his wife of 54 years, Dianne, he was a devoted partner and steady companion. To his four sons, Mike, Josh, Ben, and Dan, he was a father whose guidance, humor, and example shaped the men they became. He welcomed their wives, Meg, Jenn, Gayla, and Michelle, not as in-laws but as daughters. As a grandfather to Bryson and his wife Ashley, Anna, Nora, Jonny, Jessie, Adia, and Ash, he was their greatest cheerleader, taking a deep interest in every milestone. He shared a lifelong bond of teasing and deep affection with his brother Stephen and sister-in-law April and their daughters, Sena and Alyssa, and held an enduring love for his sister Janet and her husband Wayne and Janet’s son, Lloyd.

He will be remembered for his giving spirit, his quick wit, and the way he made sure people knew they were supported. Perhaps the most telling evidence of his heart was discovered only after his passing: a folder labeled “brag” on his iPad, filled not with professional accolades, but with photographs of his wife, children and grandchildren.

It was, quite simply, exactly who he was.

His Funeral Service and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Michael’s memory to www.vohboston.org, in support of cancer research at Mass General Brigham.
